Spectator Tips

Here is a helpful listing for people who are spectators of marathons or a running race of any distance.

Additional Things to Consider

Race spectators should be prepared for potential long waiting times during the event. Races can take a long time especially when you include time before the race starts, navigating crowds, etc. Make sure to dress warmly enough, and bring food and water for yourself, and consider bringing a chair to sit on.

If you want to see your runner multiple times during a race, know the course, know your runners pace, travel light and be flexible. As the race unfolds, you will have to make adjustments.

If your runner is depending on you for nutrition or some other support, make sure you are clear about location and which side of the road you will be on. It is up to the spectator to spot the runner and shake him or her out of their “zone”.

Discuss how and where to connect after the race. Finish areas can be crazy even in smallish races. Many races have a family meet up zone for after the race.
